New Dishcloth

You know the saying that goes something like "You don't appreciate what you have until it's gone"? In the case of my dishwasher, I didn't realize realized how much I missed it until I got it back.

You might remember that last summer the dishwasher died a sudden death, leaving me hand-washing dishes. Since we're adding on to the house, some day we plan to remodel the kitchen as well. I didn't want to make Frugaldad install a new dishwasher twice. So as the weeks and months went by, I kept telling myself and Frugaldad, "I don't really spend that much extra time hand-washing." and "The dishes are cleaner this way" since the old dishwasher didn't do a fabulous job. It was picky about detergent and rinse-aid and where the dishes were loaded and what color shirt I was wearing and what the price of eggs in China was. I was at the point, anyway, where I was hand-washing all the glass cups and glasses because they came out dirtier than they went in.

But then I had a baby, and having two free hands to do dishes became a luxury. Around Christmas time, Frugaldad said I should go shopping and decide what dishwasher I wanted and we'd consider it my birthday present. I finally managed to get out around New Year's and found a dishwasher that I liked that was on sale. Frugaldad went and bought it and the next day he picked it up and installed it. It was two days before my birthday, so he told me that technically I should wait to use it. I rolled my eyes and started loading dirty dishes.

And I realized how much time a decent dishwasher could save me. I don't have to worry about pulling out dishes that are dirty and need re-washed. While I still hand-wash pots and pans and big plastic items, I have less dishes to hand-wash overall because this dishwasher holds more dishes.

I can't believe I hand-washed for FIVE months!
